Baby #2 cooking.
Of course I love new gear. Don’t you? I’m a Canon fan myself, but there’s no hatin’ on the Nikon here. Or Olympus. Maybe Pentax, though. When I hear it I think Playtex, which is something else entirely.
Have you ever lusted after a piece of gear, only to find out/remember/be told that the money has been set aside for a trip, or a root canal, or groceries, and will not be used to purchase anything made of metal and wires? How incredibly depressing. There’s only one way that I know of to force a new camera purchase on your spouse. You may not want to hear it, but it may be your only option.
Someone needs to get pregnant.
I know, I know. This is harsh. This is extreme. But it works. When baby #1 was born (2005), I was able to convince the wife that a cool digital camera would help us take the most awesome-ist of pictures evah. In her pregnant state, she approved the purchase of a Canon 20D (and I believe that in Texas, any purchase decisions approved by a pregnant wife are binding and irreversible). Wow, did those first pictures I took with the new camera suck. Not knowing anything about lighting, I resorted to blasting about 1200 watt seconds from every corner of the garage. It’s actually the first recorded case of a baby getting a tan before being born. That’s ok, though, because it got my started on the path of photography. (As a funny side note, I also took pictures in the same set-up about 8 hours before labor started. Talk about some great facial expressions.)
Since then, we’ve added another boy to the mix. I think we are done on the reproductive end of things. According to my doctor with the funny name, at least. Which really is a pity, since the 1Ds Mark IV is almost-certainly coming out this year.
Update: KTA reader Julie has chimed in with a photo selection, showing her 4 (!) beautiful children with their matching camera ‘gifts’. Based on the camera brands, I’d say the first and last kid must be extra special.

I came up with another option that had similar results. I encouraged my wife to take up riding again. After she’d been riding a couple of months the guilt had built up to the level where she went and bought the camera for me.
Yay! I may have a new favorite blog to read!
I’m definitely forwarding this blog to my husband, since I’m preggo and all. Certainly it’s time for that 135 L lens I’ve been wanting, for the BABY’S sake.
hahaha… SO true… you have no idea. About 3 and a half years ago, my wife and I were about to have our first child. My parents gave me the $ to buy a Nikon D80. I’d been into photography in the past, but my SLR had broken and I knew I needed a DSLR to beat the point-and-shoot (non-artistic
motion blur…
3 1/2 years later… I’m a full-time photographer thanks to my pregnant wife and the fact that we got a camera and I found my passion.
Great post.
